A Week of Success: Shofar, Shabbos Shuvah, and Community Expansion

Rosh Hashanah & Shofar Success: Our “Shofar in the Park” event was a huge hit, drawing close to 100 people total over the two days! It was amazing to see such a diverse mix of Sephardic, Ashkenazic, and non-affiliated Jews coming together to hear the Shofar—a real *Kiddush Hashem!* We shared the message that the Shofar’s sound is the King recognizing the voice of the prince—the Jewish Neshama! It really hit home; some people were even crying. We gave out apples and honey and new holiday magazines for children.

A powerful story: Two young Israeli guys approached me, explaining they were hungry and had no food at home for the Chag (holiday) as they were still struggling to settle in the States. We immediately gave them our address. They came for the Rosh Hashanah dinner, and we uplifted them and fed them to their heart’s content. One of them, who had a Yeshiva education but ran into difficult times, even asked for a kippah to wear every day! That’s what it’s about!

Shul & Shabbos Shuvah Update: The shul was buzzing! On Rosh Hashanah, close to 180 people attended Minyanim and Shofar. Around 40 people attended our Shabbos Shuvah speech about the laws and significance of Yom Kippur. We concluded with a tribute to Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson A”H, the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s mother, whose Yahrzeit is this Sunday, 6 Tishrei. We shared the incredible story of her gathering and grinding leaves into ink while in exile in Kazakhstan so her husband, the great Tzadik and Kabbalist Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson A”H, could continue to write his profound Divrei Torah. We also mentioned the Rebbe’s teaching that the three letters in his mother’s name חנה (Chana) stand for the three core Mitzvos (commandments) of Jewish women: חלה (Challah), נדה (Niddah), and הדלקת נר (lighting candles). This explanation really touched the women attending.

We also expanded our hospitality: We moved our dining room to a larger space in our “Chabad House” on E14th Street, successfully hosting whole families and singles alike this past Yom Tov, with plans to continue throughout the whole holiday season and many Shabbosim throughout the year, B’ezras Hashem.

With blessings for a good sweet year and Moshiach Now! Rabbi Zalmen DrizinChabad of Kings Highway / Bethel Jewish Center
